These drawings show the probable state of St Piran’s Oratory immediately prior to Michell’s excavation in 1843. Much of the east wall collapsed during the excavation, and the south doorway shortly after. These details are not shown here. The drawings are made from a combination of the measurements and descriptions in William Michell’s 1835 notebook in the Courtney Library Truro, William Haslam’s 1844 book Perranzabuloe, and other sources in the Courtney Library. There are several discrepancies in the various sources, including contradictions in Michell’s own writings, so some details may be inaccurate. These drawings are ©2006 Vernon Bartlett, Bath, to whom I am very grateful for his permission to use them here. Please note that they may not be reproduced without written permission.
